HOPE Number Nine will be taking place on July 13, 14, and 15, 2012 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. H.O.P.E. stands for Hackers On Planet Earth, one of the most creative and diverse hacker events in the world. It’s been happening since 1994. Keynotes include William Binney and The Yes Men.
There are three scheduled speaker tracks. Talks begin at 10am Friday morning, July 13, and end Sunday evening with Closing Ceremonies.
Workshops and Hacker Space Village scheduling grids are available! Classes, workshops, and many hands-on experiences are scheduled, and there is still room for more. Visit the Call for Hackerspaces for more information, or to submit a proposal.
At every HOPE conference, we have a wide variety of vendors that are of interest to hackers. Do you have something to sell, exhibit, or otherwise share with attendees at HOPE Number Nine? We’re making available a limited number of tables for folks who want to be able to display or sell their wares. These tables will be located in a highly-trafficked area of the Penn Plaza Pavillion on the second floor of the hotel.

Volunteer
Are you a HOPE veteran who wants to get more involved with the conference this year? Is this your very first HOPE conference and you have no idea what to expect?
You can help run the show! Get a new perspective on a conference you’ve attended and loved or show up with no direction at all and meet some really awesome people.
We’re looking for volunteers in the following areas:
Setup: On Thursday, July 12th, we’re stringing cables, setting up lighting, audio, and video equipment, building art installations, and getting the conference ready for several thousand attendees. Being on the setup crew is a great way to meet organizers and other volunteers – both old regulars and brand new faces – and to get acquainted with the conference before it starts!
Audio/Video: Our A/V gurus are seeking volunteers to operate sound boards, lighting consoles, projectors, and video cameras during the talks. Volunteers are needed to help set up the gear and to help maintain it over the course of the weekend.
Information Desk: Lost? Volunteers are needed to help provide orientation and information to fellow attendees, as well as disseminate vital schedule and event updates.
Special Ops: Things change, problems arise, and we need volunteers to be available to help solve these unforeseen problems and assist in other volunteer areas. Examples include errands-running, message passing, and filling in for other volunteers who need a brief break.

This past weekend in downtown Brooklyn New York, a few miles away from the new Nets stadium was SummerCon 2012. SummerCon has the title of being the longest-running American hacker conference where information security professional gets to mingle with hackers, security researchers, law enforcement officials and students thanks to Facebook.
The unique aspect besides the highly technical presentations at SummerCon that leads to some great conversations are how the speakers are encourage to drink an enormous amount of alcohol by the attendees during their talk.
No one was more impressive in the consumption than Gillis Jones who conducted the final presentation of the event. Jones discussed Why Security Still Isn’t Taken Seriously By Business. Although his presentation was informative and spot on, the memorable part was his drinking demonstration before, during and after the presentation. Many attendees where surprised he made it through the end.
Mark Trumpbour and redpantz organized a great event in SummerCon 2012 that was rich in content and a comfortable social atmosphere.
The after party (burlesque) was just as entertaining as the actual conference and I will leave it at that…

SummerCon 2012 a hacker’s conference being conducted in beautiful downtown Brooklyn started today June 8th. Doors opened at noon, with opening remarks from organizer redpantz and Mark Trumpbour.
Fermin Serna conducted the first talk titled “CVE-2012-0769, the case of the perfect info leak”. The talk focused around why ASLR is a key mitigation and the need of info leaks for reliable exploitation.
Jon Oberheide and Charlie Miller followed Serna’s talk with a presentation titled “Space Pope on Android” that focused on Android security. They also graced attendees with a verity of dance moves.
Other presentations were conducted by Collin Mulliner (Binary Instrumentation for Android) that investigated how bug hunting on Android based systems are becoming more difficult as well as Dr. Raid & Aaron Portnoy (The Busticati 0xC Step Program to Program Recovery) that looked into instructing attendees on structured program recovery.
The event also ended with a Super Mega Happy Go Lucky party featuring DJ Keith and sponsored by IOActive.

Foreign spies, including U.S. allies, are increasingly launching digital assaults against the nation to steal sensitive economic secrets, according to a recent report by the U.S. Office of National Counterintelligence Executive (UNSEX). The theft of this critical information shows that attackers – state-sponsored or not – are enlisting whatever weaknesses in systems they can to thieve corporate and government data, often going unnoticed for months. Experts share background on the types of attacks to watch out for and what to do to thwart them.

The Counter Terror Expo US is coming to Washington, DC on May 16 and 17 to the Washington Convention Center. I had the esteemed opportunity to interview Wayne Crawford, Vice President of North America, Clarion Events for Counter Terror Expo US and Amb. David J. Smith, Senior Fellow & Cyber Center Director at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies during my weekly BlogTalkRadio show. Mr. Crawford provided a wealth of information about the upcoming event while Amb. Smith gave some insight about the topic he will be discussing at the Expo. Wayne Crawford Bio: Wayne Crawford, Vice President, North America with Clarion Events Limited has over 25 years of diverse exposition management experience. He currently heads Clarion’s effort to establish a presence in the United States, including the launch of Counter Terror Expo scheduled for May 2012 in Washington, DC. Previously, Wayne held leadership roles in three of the country’s largest shows – NAB Las Vegas, the world’s largest electronic media event, where he served as vice president of sales; the Consumer Electronics Show as group director; and the JCK Jewelry shows as vice president/show director were he led the launch team. Wayne has also served in top management roles on the supplier side of the industry, including a stint as Vice President of Sales at a2z, Inc., an exposition management software producer. He is actively involved in IAEE and is a frequent speaker at IAEE, PCMA and SISO events.
Ambassador David Smith Bio: Ambassador David Smith (Ret.) joined the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies as a Senior Fellow in 2005. In 2012, he became Director of the Potomac Institute Cyber Center. Ambassador Smith has had a distinguished career in defense and foreign affairs, is an expert on international security issues, and in recent years has focused on the emerging field of cyber security. He writes and lectures frequently on cyber issues and their role in international affairs, and his address to the International Cyber Defence Conference in Istanbul, Turkey in May of 2011 was entitled, “Russia, Georgia and the Shape of Cyber Wars to Come.”
Ambassador Smith’s other areas of expertise include U.S. strategic missile defense, arms control, European security policy, and security relationships with China, Russia, and Korea. He also has in-depth expertise and experience in building stability and security in the South Caucasus region. Ambassador Smith is currently involved in a major project to assist the Republic of Georgia in reforming its national security institutions, and serves as Director of the Georgian Security Analysis Center in Tbilisi.
