Apple has released security updates for Apple iOS, Safari 5.1.1, OS X
Lion v10.7.2, iWork 09, and Apple TV 4.4 to address multiple
vulnerabilities. Exploitation of these vulnerabilities may allow an
attacker to execute arbitrary code, cause a denial-of-service
condition, obtain sensitive information, and bypass security
restrictions.
US-CERT encourages users and administrators to review the following
Apple Support Articles and apply any necessary updates to help
mitigate the risks.

Today, the White House issued a Presidential Proclamation designating October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. On Friday, I will be speaking together with Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano at the official kick-off event for the month at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. In the following weeks, the Department of Homeland Security will be hosting events across the nation to bring cybersecurity awareness to your state and your community. Every company, school, and family should use October as an opportunity to focus on cybersecurity – update training, attend or host an event, or talk to your children about responsible use of the Internet.
This is no surprise, scammers have taken big news events such as Michael Jackson and Mel Gibson’s death as well as the Haiti and Japan earthquakes to name a few topics to either profit or spread malware. “As much of the world mourns the passing of Steve Jobs — one of the technology industry’s greatest visionaries — the bottom feeders of the cyber crime world are greedily exploiting the tragedy through scams promising unwitting users a chance to win a free iPad.
Sophos has reported in its Naked Security blog on one such scam already circulating via Facebook that reads as follows: “In memory of Steve, a company is giving out 50 ipads tonight. R.I.P. Steve Jobs,” followed by a tailored bit.ly link ending with “restinpeace-steve-jobs.” Clicking the link takes users to one of countless malicious Web pages.”

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 4, 2011) –On Thursday, October 6th, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and First Lady Judge Katie O’Malley will join Facebook’s Vice President for U.S. Public Policy Joel Kaplan and Cartoon Network President/COO Stuart Snyder, State and local education leaders, and other special guests for a special National Bullying Prevention Month kick-off event at Arundel High School in Anne Arundel County, MD.
Governor and Judge O’Malley are committed to addressing bullying in Maryland. Though Maryland is the seventh state to enact an anti-bullying law that protects all students, there are still many instances of bullying throughout communities and schools. In May, the Governor, First Lady and Lt. Governor participated in events during the second annual Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Maryland. The Governor and First Lady O’Malley recorded a PSA encouraging Marylanders to stand up against bullying, and the First Lady also recorded a video for the It Gets Better campaign to give hope to LGBT youth and other young people facing bullying and harassment.

Topher Kesslerof CNET wrote an interesting article about the PDF-based malware threat for the Mac OS X. Apple had released a new security update, updating its malware definition, aimed at protecting Mac users from this threat, but according to Kessler’s article, it seems to have been revised.

Recently a new PDF-based malware threat for OS X was discovered that displays a Chinese PDF file while it installs and runs its malicious code in the background. While the initial version of this malware (OSX/Revir.A) was detected over a week ago, the criminals developing the code are busy revising and refining it, and over the weekend a variant has been identified (OSX/Revir.B). As with all malware, new versions of these threats are likely to surface in the future, and as they do, expect malware detection utilities (including Apple’s XProtect) to follow close behind and label them alphabetically as they appear.
